Obedience is an act of willingness and readiness to act on an instruction given to one by a superior person. It’s an act of hearing or harkening to a superior authority.
To Obey God, you must willingly submit and surrender yourself to God’s authority not minding if it’s convenient for you or not. Nevertheless, Jesus is not commanding us to obey him as slaves but has his friends and that is why he said, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew11:29-30.
Your obedience to God is not a punishment from him, but he seeks a loving personal relationship with you. Wouldn’t you show how much you love him by obeying him?
The fall of man was the result of an act of disobedience which was displayed by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. However, Jesus Christ is our perfect example of Obedience in that he obeyed the father by submitting his life willingly for the salvation of the whole world. Isaiah 54:7 says, “He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth”. This is a demonstration of total obedience to God’s will.
Why is obedience to God important?
1. It’s a sign that you Trust God
The popular Gospel Hymn, “Trust and Obey” written by John H. Sammis (1846-1919) gives us the knowledge that we can only obey God if we are able to trust him. Our obedience to God is a sign that we trust that his plans for us are the best (Jeremiah 29:11) and that he is the one leading us and gently guiding us in love into the glorious future that he has planned for us. Therefore, when we know this, obeying God will become an easy act for us.
2. Obedience to God lead us to life
When we obey God, we are guided aright to have life both here on earth and in heaven. Also, we are shielded from all evil and every plan of the enemy.
Isaiah 1:19-20, “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.”
3. We become God’s own people
Exodus 19:5 CEV
“Now if you will faithfully obey me, you will be my very own people. The whole world is mine,”
Obedience to God is a sign that we belong to him, we are his and he belongs to us. It shows that we acknowledge Him as the all-in-all over our life. It means his voice counts the most in our life. How then, can we say we are God’s children when we do not obey him?
Faithful obedience to divine instructions will make you become a woman/man after God’s heart.
Obedience + Faith = Experience and experience produce hope, and hope does not make us ashamed.
You can trust God again. Obey in faith and you will eat the good of the land.
4. It shows that you Love God
As humans, we do not obey anyone we disregard, someone we do not love or have no respect for. In like manner, your obedience to God shows you love him and value his instructions. When you love Jesus by obeying him, you are automatically inviting the love of the father, the father will love you too. He will not only love you, but he will make his abode in your heart.
John 14:15 CEV, “Jesus said to his disciples: If you love me, you will do as I command.”
John 14:23, “Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”
Dear sister, obedience is proof of your love for God.
If you love him, then obey him. Never delay in obeying divine instructions.
5. You will prosper
Do you desire prosperity? Obedience to God’s word is the key.
Deuteronomy 5:33 says, “Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess”.
Joshua 1:8, “This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in all you do”.
Obedience to God’s instruction leads to success and prosperity.
Action step: Get a custom obedience journal where you write God’s instructions given to you, when you obeyed, and the blessings you experienced after the act of obedient. This will help you keep track of your love relationship with God.
The bottom line
Has the Lord given you any instruction to obey but you are delaying and considering whether or not to do it? Or are you seeking for the opinion of men to obey divine instructions?
It may not sound logical and obeying the lord might be beyond your human capacity and ability.
The Lord asks me to tell you today that, “you just obey me, whether or not it’s convenient and you will eat the good of the land”. You are not meant to struggle to obey God for he creates in you the desire and the strength to do his will, Philippians 2:13. Ask for his help today and depend on him to help you obey. There is a miracle ahead.
